Step Three: Food and Supplements to the Rescue
THIS BOOK IS ABOUT ELIMINATING YOUR EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS due to hormone and brain chemistry imbalances so you can live a happy and thriving life. Although it is not a diet or nutrition bible, I will provide you with the nutrition information you need to keep your biochemistry in optimum function.
Iâm sure you, like so many of my curious and intelligent patients, have taken the leap into the baffling and overwhelming world of supplements and tinctures. Women walk into my office for their visits with gigantic shopping bags, filled to the brim with a cornucopia of pills, creams, sprays, and lozenges. Their kitchen cabinets and pantries have no more room for food! They have built their own mini-pharmacies filled with everything under the sun.
They have tried every kind of magic solution for female troubles from every source. The Internet suggests a myriad of panaceas, and even if you are a skeptic, you might find yourself purchasing the promise of health from the elixir of bee pollen to various soy extracts. The truth is, many sites give contradictory information or worse, poorly researched data on what to do and what to take to find your way back to health. The twenty-one-year-old earthmamaâs daughter at the health food store may have become your go-to resource for guidance.
Most salespeople who work in vitamin and supplement stores do not have the education required to make sound recommendations to improve your brain chemistry and your hormonal balance. Cocktails of black cohosh, St. Johnâs wort, and a homeopathic rescue remedy, or a potentially toxic phytoestrogen can leave your wallet empty and your health worse off than ever. Some herb and supplement combinations can actually interfere with your hormonal function by blocking the estrogen receptors. What a waste of time, money, and hope when you may end up more imbalanced than you were in the first place.
How do you know that what you take is what you need to feel better? How do you know if the products you buy are super potent, contaminated, or even contain anything remotely connected to what is listed on the label that is next to impossible to read? Is the company you buy products from testing their supplements to verify quality and purity to insure that they are free from pesticides, bacteria, and heavy metals? So many raw materials in herbs and supplements come from China and India, where sanitation and quality practices are not what we expect. Beware, many U.S. manufacturing companies source out the cheapest raw materials possible, and the vast majority do little or no testing of their source materials or of their finished products. Yes, they create an affordable vitamin. But do you want to swallow it?
How do you research everything you put in your mouth, especially when you are compromised emotionally and physically? After years of research and keeping current with the latest studies and journal entries plus over twenty years of clinical practice, I feel confident sharing my knowledge and experience about supplements with you.
